Apps are probably evil. Or at least one is in Mindful, a new horror movie set to star Jenny Slate. What if a meditation app … wanted to kill you? How deeply un-relaxing.
To be honest this concept kind of sounds like an SNL skit stretched to feature film length, but Jenny Slate is good in everything, from Kroll Show to Obvious Child (pictured above) to Venom, and so perhaps she can elevate the material. Mindful comes from director Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People) and writer Les Bohem ( the Syfy miniseries Taken, as well as extremely ’90s disaster flicks Daylight and Dante’s Peak). Slate is among the executive producers.
Deadline describes the plot thusly:
In Mindful, when her husband shockingly dies while meditating on the Mindful app, Angela (Slate), deeply suspicious of the new wellness craze, uncovers supernatural forces that have fused with the technology. As the app’s popularity spreads like wildfire, she is forced to confront her own demons and dive into a terrifying ‘out of body’ experience in order to save the ones she loves.
Evil technology! Evil self-care! Two great tastes that may or may not go great together! No release date has been announced, but we will keep an eye out for further updates—and for tie-in apps that pretend to offer evil meditation. That has to happen, right?
